The Comet Moth or Madagascan Moon Moth, Argema mittrei  is a very large moth that is native to Madagascar, which is the 4th largest Islandin the world. It is the biggest silkworm in the world. Although endangered in the wild due to habitat loss, the Comet Moth is being successfully bred in captivity. It can be seen at many free flying butterfly houses.

Botanical Fine Art Painting, Nature, Insect "IO MOTH" The Art of Nature, Fine Art by Mindy Lighthipe

                         

 

The Io Moth, Automeris io, is sexually dimorphic, males having bright yellow forewings, body, and legs, while females have reddish brown forewings, body, and legs. The males also have much bigger plumose (feathery) antennae than the females. Both have one big black to bluisheyespot with some white in the center, on each hindwing, a defense mechanism meant to frighten off potential predators. The caterpillars turn bright green and have many spines that cause a lot of pain if touched. The spines have a poison that is released with the slightest touch. The Io Moth is depicted here on the Eastern Redbud, Forest Pansy, Cercis canadensis.

Purple is by far my favorite color! I had fun doing these 2 eggplants as a part of my online watercolor class demonstrations. I used lots of strong color to get the bold dark almost black purple and hardly any color on the variegated one. It was challenging and I enjoy pushing myself in different directions, learning just how far I can push the paint. This listing is for the original and ships free in the continental USA. This listing is for the original watercolor and gouache painting. The Hickory Horned Devil is the caterpillar for the Royal Walnut Moth. The crazy spikes that come out of the body ward off potential predators. They are one of the largest caterpillars I have ever raised. They can reach up 8 inches long!!! Yikes!

Caterpillar, Nature, Illustrative Art, Insects, Wildlife "LUNA MOTH CATERPILLAR" The Art of Nature, Fine Art by Mindy Lighthipe

I really enjoy raising moths and butterflies from caterpillars. This Luna Moth Caterpillar was one I raised from an egg. The Luna Moth is part of the Saturniid or Giant Silk Moth family and is native to the USA. One of their host plants is Liquid amber or the SweetGum tree. As caterpillars they are voracious eaters. As adults they come out of their cocoons and do not have a mouth. Their sole purpose as an adult is to find a mate and reproduce. The adults only live 7-14 days.
