Torch Ginger and Malachite Butterfly
This huge waxy flower stands 3-4 feet off the ground which is why the common name is the The Torch Ginger. The Scientific name is : Etlingera elatior and it belongs to the Family: Zingiberaceae (ginger)
The Butterfly is commonly known as the Malachite and the scientific name is Siproeta stelenes. It is a neotropical brush-footed butterfly. Brush-footed butterflies only have 4 visible legs. There are 2 smaller, almost microscopic legs located under the head located at the top of the thorax. It is named for the mineral malachite, which is similar in color to the bright green on the butterfly's wings.
