This is one of my latest Solar Intaglio Prints of my FAVORITE FROG! The drawing was etched onto a polymer plate by exposure to the sun. The plate was inked by me in the traditional method of intaglio printmaking and hand pulled on an etching press. After the print was pulled I hand tinted it with watercolors. Illustrative Art, Colored Pencil “BURROWING OWL STRETCH” The Art of Nature, Fine Art by Mindy Lighthipe

The Burrowing Owl is a very small ground dwelling owl. I was really surprised when I saw them. I thought they would be bigger but they only stand about 6-8 inches tall. They live in small burrows int he ground much like prairie dogs. They scurry around the ground and if a predator gets close they rapidly run down into the hole. This little guy was a delight to watch. I went with a friend to a place in Cape Coral which is known for protecting these endangered owls. He came out of the burrow and started to stretch his wings. I had such a great time that day and hope to do more paintings of these delightful little owls! This listing is for an original watercolor. It is on Fabriano 140 lb watercolor paper.

Illustrative Wildlife Fine Art ,Watercolor Painting, Colored Pencil,Tropical Bird “Toucan in Papaya Tree” The Art of Nature, Fine Art by Mindy Lighthipe

This original painting of a Toucan in a Papaya Tree is a painting I demonstrated in my  book, The Art of Botanical and Bird Illustration .

I used colored pencil and watercolor pencil to do this painting on Fabriano Artistico Hot Press 300 lb watercolor paper. For the painting I used my sketches and photographs of a Rainbow Keeled Toucan and purchased a papaya tree that I planted and grew in my yard. Lucky for me I live in Florida and a local nursery had a good sized papaya tree I could do live drawings from. This is one of my favorite paintings and I throughly enjoyed every minute of composing it and painting.

This orchid is part of the Dendrobium family. They can grow on trees or on the ground. They have a pseudobulb which stores water. As the flower grows on a new pseudobulb the plant keeps adding to the cluster and spills over rocks and crevices.

"HUMMINGBIRD MOTH & SIBERIAN IRISES" by Mindy Lighthipe

The tiny little hummingbird moth hovers over flowers and zooms around the garden just like a real hummingbird only tinier! This fellow zoomed in and out of these Siberian Irises in my garden and I just had to paint it!

"LOBSTER CLAW HELICONIA WITH MOSAIC BUTTERFLY" Fine Art by Mindy Lighthipe

The heliconia in this painting is referred to as a "Lobster Claw" because of it shape, size and color. The butterfly in the painting is commonly know as the Mosaic Butterfly. The latin name is Colubra dirce. I have encountered both of these species on my many trips to Central America. I really enjoyed putting them together as I like the brilliant color of the flower with the muted, earth tones of the highly patterned underside of the butterfly.

"PEACOCK BUTTERFLY" by Mindy Lighthipe

The Peacock Butterfly is common in Europe and is easily identified by the large eyespots on the hind wings. The eyespots are designed to startle or confuse would be predators into thinking it is a much larger animal. If the predator does take a bite, it is usually directed towards the eyespot. The delicate wings may tear or get damaged during the attack but it allows the butterfly to break free and flee for its life.

Moths and butterflies belong to the classification of Insects called Lepidoptera. Lepidoptera is a latin word which means "scaled wing". When magnified under a microscope the scales of the wing structure are easy to see. For this series of paintings I did the background by looking under a microscope and drew the individual wing pattern and structure in pencil while placing the colorful butterfly on the surface in watercolor. The original has been sold but is available in 3 sizes of fine art reproduction canvas prints. Please look through the rest of the gallery to see other images from the series. "ZEBRA SWALLOWTAIL BUTTERFLY" by Mindy Lighthipe

The Zebra Swallowtail, Eurytides marcellus has triangular wings with long tails. It has distinctive black and white markings on its wings and some small red and blue markings on both bottom corners of the wings. There are two seasonal forms. Spring forms have more white and have small black tails with white tips. Summer forms have more black and have longer tails with more white in them. This butterfly uses the PawPaw trees as its host plant.

"CYCLOMMATUS ELAPHUS" Fine Art by Mindy Lighthipe

Cyclommatus elaphus is the Latin name for this male stag beetle. The very large impressive mandibles look like they could some serious damage. They actually are fairly harmless unless you happen to be another male stag beetle looking to hone in on its territory!

This unique colorful beetle is done on coquille board. The surface of the paper has raised bumps and it easily creates a stippled appearance. It was fun to work on the paper and create the variations of iridescent colors as it shimmers across the page.
