Wildlife Art,Reptile, Nature, Fine Art Watercolor Painting "Senor Iguana" The Art of Nature, Fine Art by Mindy Lighthipe

This iguana painting is not a painting of just any iguana, but my rescued iguana, named Father Mulcahy! Father M came to live with me after he got too big for his aquarium. He was over 4 feet long and loved to be part of the family. I had a house full of rescue cats and he fit right in. He loved to chase the cats throughout the house and bask in the sun on top of the cat condo. He was a sweet and intelligent animal that responded to human touch and loved to watch television.... his favorite show was M*A*S*H! When he passed away I was heartbroken and painted his portrait to show how gentle and beautiful he was. The painting was included in Splash 15 by North Light Books. The original painting is available as well as canvas prints

Wildlife Art, Nature, Frog Painting, "MASKED TREE FROG" The Art of Nature, Fine Art by Mindy Lighthipe

Smilisca phaeota is a fairly large tree frog of the NeoTropics. It is active at night during the wet season. You can often hear the males calling to the females during the mating season. The frog is sometime referred to as the Camouflage Frog as it has the ability to change from green to brown. It can be found in shallow temporary pools of water. Females lay their eggs in puddles of water which accumulate, covering the top of the water with a film of up to 2,000 eggs. Tadpoles develop quickly in the temporary pools and puddles.

Illustrative Wildlife Fine Art, Sea Life,Mixed Media Art “SALLY LIGHTFOOT CRAB” The Art of Nature, Fine Art by Mindy Lighthipe

The Sally Lightfoot Crab is an amazing array of dazzling color! I saw these crabs while visiting the Galapagos Islands. At different stages of their lifecycle, they molt their outer shells and emerge with a different color combination. As juveniles they are a darker indigo blue and as they age they become more brilliant and multicolored. I painted this on Fabriano Artistico Soft Press 300lb watercolor paper. I first used watercolor to establish the basic colors. The rocks were done with a granulating watercolor called hematite. I finished the painting using colored pencil and pastels for do the details on top of the watercolor.

Bird, Painting, Green Jay, Nature, Wildlife, Figure, Fine Art Watercolor Painting "SPEAKING TO THE GODS" The Art of Nature, Fine Art by Mindy Lighthipe

The Green Jay is part of the Corvidae species of birds and is related to crows and ravens. It is found in the Neo Tropics and northward into the southern parts of Texas. in the USA. They are inquisitive and like to "talk". In this painting I wanted to play with the brilliant color of the bird against the natural stone structure of a Mayan bas relief. The warrior is found as a relief on the side of a Mayan temple with his hand extended. It seemed like the perfect "perch" for the Green Jay to land and have a nice chat.

This little hummer was just itching to be painted! I did this painting while leading an art tour to Costa Rica. The flower it is sitting on is a type of heliconia. The tropics have the most bizarre and beautiful shapes and colors in both flora and fauna.

The Aracari is a member of the Toucan Family. It is a smaller bird and is found in Central and South America. They love to eat palm nuts! I had the wonderful experience of watching this bird "pop" these palm nuts into its mouth as if it were popcorn!

Illustrative Wildlife Fine Art ,Watercolor Painting, Colored Pencil,Tropical Bird “Toucan in Papaya Tree” The Art of Nature, Fine Art by Mindy Lighthipe

This original painting of a Toucan in a Papaya Tree is a painting I demonstrated in my new book, The Art of Botanical and Bird Illustration .

I used colored pencil and watercolor pencil to do this painting on Fabriano Artistico Hot Press 300lb watercolor paper. For the painting I used my sketches and photographs of a Rainbow Keeled Toucan and purchased a papaya tree that I planted and grew in my yard. Lucky for me I live in Florida and a local nursery had a good sized papaya tree I could do live drawings from. This is one of my favorite paintings and I throughly enjoyed every minute of composing it and painting.
